The Intellectual Disability Health Capability Framework says what health students need to know and be able to do before they start working as health professionals. Health workers need to know how to give good health care to people with intellectual disability. Future health workers should learn about intellectual disability at university when they learn other things about health.

The goal of the Framework is to make education and training about intellectual disability better for health students.

The Framework is for people and groups that teach health students, such as universities and training organisations. It helps educators know what they need to teach health students so that they can provide safe and effective health care to people with intellectual disability.

What the Framework includes

  • clear skills and abilities that health students should have by the time they finish their studies
  • learning outcomes to help educators teach these skills
  • examples showing how the Framework can be used
  • self-assessment tools for universities and educators to review their current courses, and their own knowledge and skills
  • education resources to help educators use the Framework

Why it is useful

Many health students finish their studies without learning about intellectual disability. This can make it hard for them to give good health care to people with intellectual disability when they start work. This Framework uses advice from people with intellectual disability, their families and carers, and health and education experts. It explains the skills health students should have when they finish their studies.

Education resources have also been made to help educators to use the Framework. The education resources include things like case studies, lesson plans and assessment questions. You can find the education resources linked below.
